Floor Coatings

Choosing from different flooring systems for your garage floor coating is not an easy feat. There are a lot of options. But one coating does stand out, and that is epoxy flooring. This is also known as resinous flooring. It is a very durable and sustainable coating that you can also use as decorative for any surface. It’s high resistance to wear and tear, among other things, is the reason why many prefer it for their flooring.  Moreover, understand that for a garage floor, epoxy should be the solution. But first, you need to know what epoxy flooring is.

Epoxy Flooring

An epoxy flooring consists of a combination of polymer resins and hardeners. They react to one another, and this causes a chemical bond with each compound and the floor itself. The band also creates a hard plastic material that is highly resistant and durable. Also, in other words, it is a type of flooring that comprises several layers of epoxy which is applied to a floor. It is different from an epoxy coating because, for epoxy floors, they must have a depth of at least two millimeters while anything less than that is considered as a coating.

What are the different types of epoxy floor coating?

Self-Leveling Epoxy Coating

It is used by applying it over old, damaged, or even new concrete floors. It creates a smooth and leveled texture on the surface of the floor. For your garage floor, the epoxy coating of this type should be appropriate. It will create a shiny and seamless look. It also comes in different colors that can be used in many commercial or residential structures.

Mortar Epoxy Coating

It is considered as the most demanding out of all the other epoxy floor coating. It is composed of a hundred percent of solid epoxies and quartz sand. This coating is preferable for places that require a floor to be highly chemically resistant and can withstand impact. Examples of these kinds of places are warehouses, manufacturing plants, and also even garages.

Pure Solids Epoxy Coating

The 100% solids epoxy coating is the most durable type of epoxy. Most professional flooring installers will recommend its use because the coating could last around 20 years. For places, with heavy human traffic, this is suitable since the floor should be protected from abrasions and chemical substances.

Water-Based Epoxy Coating

It is considered as more of a primer and sealer because it is spread thinly. It also doesn’t have the same resistance as the others. This epoxy type is more user friendly, and it can also be used to help penetrate porous surfaces. It is also often utilized to create a glossy surface for concrete.

Solvent Based Epoxy Coating

This epoxy coating uses solvents, and it is the same as the water-based epoxy type because it is also often used as a primer and sealer. It contains solids that range from thirty percent to seventy percent, which means that it has a really thin layer. It is not an often desirable coating so keep that in mind if you do decide to use it.
