Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for the betterment of people’s lives. A new technology that has been around for a relatively long time is the electronic cigarette (also known as e-cigarette or vape), it gives smokers a healthier alternative for their smoking habit and eventually helps them stop smoking altogether. So how does this new technology work?
An e-cigarette is a device that resembles a tobacco cigarette. However, there are many differences between a conventional cigarette and an e-cigarette.
No Matches Required
The first difference is that unlike a conventional cigarette, you do not need to light up an e-cigarette. Instead, the e-cigarette is powered up by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Older e-cigarette models are designed to appear like a real cigarette with its ‘cherry,’ a red-led light at the tip, which is glowing to simulate embers when the user is puffing the device. Since the ember is simulated and the e-cigarette is not lit; users will not worry about where to put cigar ashes and stub, unlike when they smoke real cigarettes.
The Number of Chemicals
Another difference between a conventional cigarette and an e-cigarette is what the user is inhaling. With a tobacco cigarette, the smoker is inhaling about 7000 harmful and potentially carcinogenic ingredients. In a real cigarette, the smoker is inhaling and exhaling smoke produced by the burning tobacco and cigarette paper. This smoke is hazardous both to the smoker and to people nearby through second-hand smoke. But in the e-cigarette, the user is only inhaling vaporized liquid, which is propylene-glycol based with or without added nicotine or flavoring. Meanwhile, there are only a dozen ingredients in the e-cigarette cartridge, which are all licensed and safe for human consumption.
Ability to Control Nicotine Levels
Another difference between an e-cigarette and a conventional cigarette is that the nicotine level in an electronic cigarette can be controlled. Nicotine is just optional, and an e-cigarette can be used nicotine-free. Although e-cigarettes do not claim themselves to be a stop-smoking aid, they can help lessen if not stop a smoking habit. Some smokers enjoy putting things in their mouths, so they have a tough time quitting smoking. However, if they are given a nicotine-free e-cigarette, they will still have the simulation of the repetitive hand-to-mouth action of smoking.
How do e-Cigarettes Work?
An electronic cigarette works by vaporizing a propylene-glycol based liquid and controlling the amount of vapor that a user can suction in. This process is made possible by an atomizer coil, which is composed of a microprocessor that is powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. When a user starts to suction air through the mouthpiece, the microprocessor will sense this and activate the atomiser coil that will vaporize the liquid. Another model of the e-cigarette requires the user to push a switch to activate the atomizer. The user must keep the switch turned on while he/she is puffing the e-cigarette.
Why Should You Use an Electronic Cigarette?
As mentioned above, e-cigarettes are a better alternative to using tobacco cigarettes for several reasons:
- Only the nicotine found in the liquid refill is considered as a harmful ingredient because of its addictive effect.
- People can have the effect of smoking without actually inhaling nicotine.
- Since e-cigarettes produce vapour or mist and not smoke, there is no second-hand smoke effect.
- E-cigarettes are environmentally friendly since it does not produce smoke or ashes, and the device itself is refillable and can last for a very long time.
Although the electronic cigarette has long been introduced into society, there are still no conclusive studies on their effects on human health. This means that there is still no long study on the impact of e-cigarettes; practice caution when you plan to start using them.
